In addition to its focus on lower-limb prostheses, one of the long-term goals of LIMBS is to develop a low-cost, above-elbow prosthetic arm, which will contain the functionality of a good elbow, wrist, and humeral rotation design. The LIMBS team began its research based on a prosthetic armed developed at Arizona State University that could be made for $34, as well as currently available options in the developing world, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Alimco prostheses. The initial prototype, as developed to date, has several functionality and cost benefits as an upper-extremity prosthesis, compared to other currently available options. The LIMBS prototype can be manufactured locally, for approximately $20. However, more research and development needs to take place before the arm is tested in the field.
