The LIMBS Knee was developed at LeTourneau University and was originally known as the LEGS M1 knee. It was designed in order to meet all international standards for prosthetic joints. We have tested the LIMBS Knee to meet all ISO standards; to our knowledge, the LIMBS Knee is the only knee joint in the world which meets international standards and can be fabricated locally using simple materials and tools.
While the initial design and functionality of the LIMBS Knee was completed in 2004, the LIMBS team is actively engaged in on-going improvements in functionality and fabrication techniques. Some often requested improvements include:
- A rounded top block that looks more like a knee cap when flexed and won’t tear up a patient’s pants.
- A manual lock to help with stability in deep mud or sand and to reduce patient work load during extended periods of standing.
- An option for extension assist.
We are also working on the development of a pediatric knee. It is a scaled down version of the LIMBS Knee, but will be used for small children and petite women in the developing world.
